Instructor Morcego, born Alexandro Silveira in Salvador Bahia, has been training capoeira since age 7. Morcego recently moved to the United States to continue his mission of sharing Brazilian culture and the art of capoeira with the world. Instructor Morcego has performed in Hamilton, Bermuda to support the charity, Project Change: Bermuda, which provides reconstructive surgery for people living in poverty around the world. He has also performed in Houston, New York, Framingham, Boston, and all over the country. NEW YORK BRAZILIAN JAZZ FUNK PROJECT - The New York Brazilian Jazz Funk project was created by New York based saxophonist and composer Laura Dreyer. Laura has been performing Brazilian Jazz both as a leader and a side person for over 20 years and has worked with Dom Salvador, Helcio Milito, Leny Andrade, Portinho, to name a few, as well as many well known jazz artists. The band features New York's top Brazilian Jazz musicians including famed drummer Portinho, pianist Klaus Mueller, and many others. Historically, Americans fell in love with Brazilian Music the same way Brazilians fell in love with American Jazz and Funk. This multi-cultural musical love affair has resulted in some stellar instrumental Brazilian Jazz Funk bands, most notably Banda Black Rio, a Rio de Janeiro based group that was formed in 1976, Azymuth, which is three-piece electric funk jazz group, also from Rio de Janeiro which formed in 1972, and Opa, a Uruguayan group which was formed in the 1970s by Hugo & George Fattoruso. Many of the most popular Brazilian songwriters and performers also embraced this funky interpretation of Samba, Baião, and a myriad of other Brazilian rhythmic influences. These performers include Jorge Ben, Dom Salvador, Gilberto Gil, Deodato, João Bosco, and American jazz artists George Duke, Chick Corea, and Bill Summers, to name a few. The New York Brazilian Jazz Funk Project pays homage to this exciting music genre by performing the classics of Brazilian Jazz Funk, along with funky, fresh original compositions and arrangements that will be sure to make you want to groove and will restore your soul in these ever-changing times. This project has been made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities and the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs, as administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
