Batizado & Troca de Cordas

We are excited to welcome you to our 2024 Batizado & Troca de Cordas. Join us and experience this unique and vibrant event!

A capoeira batizado is a traditional ceremony where new students are officially initiated into the world of capoeira. During this event, students receive their first cord (cordão) symbolizing their rank and progress in the art. The term “batizado” means “baptism” in Portuguese, reflecting the significance of this rite of passage. Additionally, more experienced capoeiristas participate in the Troca de Cordas, where they exchange their cords for new ones, marking their advancement to higher levels of proficiency.

Our Batizado & Troca de Cordas is a celebration of skill, dedication, and the rich cultural heritage of capoeira. We welcome people of all walks of life to witness and be part of this vibrant tradition.

This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered by Flushing Town Hall.
